One holiday that I’ve never had a chance to do (so far) is go on a safari. I’ve been to a zoo and seen all the same animals in there, but there is something special about being able to see animals in their natural environment. Especially when it’s big animals such as a lion, where seeing them in Africa means that you get to experience how they behave in a place where they’re still boss.
There’s something a bit sad about seeing a lion or other type of predator caged up without anything to hunt. Obviously the animals get a far easier life – as long as they are kept in a place that’s designed to keep big cats and with handlers who know what they are doing – but I still think that wild animals should be left in the wild.
The only good thing is that there doesn’t seem to be many of the circuses around anymore that kept animals in terrible conditions. It shouldn’t be allowed to force wild animals to perform for people and be kept in cages the rest of the time, so I’m glad that sort of thing doesn’t happen anymore.
The problem with safaris is that they cost so much money. Even if you want to go and “volunteer” at a wildlife park you’re still expected to pay for your own flights, accommodation and food, and then work on top of all that, which doesn’t make it seem very attractive!
I can understand paying for flights, but if you’re helping out on the park and working the entire time then I think you should get your food and accommodation paid for. It’s a rip off to expect people to work for you for free and pay for the privilege.
